1、(会意。甲骨文字形,左边是一个人睁大眼睛在往下看(臣,竖目),右边是个器皿。金文又在器皿上加一小横,表示器中有水。古人以水为镜,“监”就是一个人弯着腰,睁大眼睛,从器皿的水中照看自己的面影。本义:监督,察看督促)。
